Quick Jobs – A Java Go Paperless Scanning Utility Program

After my two tier filing cabinet filled up I had two choices, buy a new filing cabinet or go paperless. I had previously heard a bunch of people talking about going paperless but I still wasn’t sure how to do it. After googling for a day or two, I realized what needed to be done. Step 1) buy a quality duplex scanner (Xerox Documate 3125 or Fujitsu ScanSnap 1500). Step 2) create a workflow that gets your scans from your scanner to the appropriate digital filing cabinet folder quickly.

Step one was easy…thanks amazon (see links to each scanner below).

Step two was more challenging. The actual workflow (process of scanning the file being renamed/moved to correct folder) needs to be about the same time it takes you to open file cabinet….find appropriate folder…then stuff into filing cabinet or you will find yourself frustrated with your go paperless effort. It is almost unanimously supported on the web that you should setup your scanner by default to scan 200-300dpi (black white) as a “searchable” pdf, sometimes abbreviated sPDF, and automatically send to one folder called “scans in waiting” or something similar. After that, the web differs wildly. Some people simply rename and move the “scans in waiting” pdfs manually then manually drag/drop then to the appropriate folder (time consuming). Others download mini programs that look for files in the “scans in waiting” folder then based off their name automatically moves them to the correct folder. Others buy software that creates keyboard shourtcuts like alt-d-d adds a date stamp while typing to make renaming easier. I struggled to find anything that would make the entire workflow super fast. Therefore, I wrote some software myself to get the job done. Enter Quick Jobs.

Quick Jobs is a dead simple yet very powerful Java based go paperless scanning utility program that automatically renames, date/time stamps, and moves files to your appropriate virtual filing cabinet folders. The program allows you to creas “job” which basically tells the program what you want the default name for the job to be as well as the source location of the pdfs (scans in waiting folder) and destination location (virtual filing cabinet). The program also gives you the ability to create custom names for a given job if you decide you want to call that particular scan a specific name. Once you have created a “job” for each of your virtual filing cabinet folders, the workflow of scanning and getting files to the right place should be as fast or faster than manually filing your papers in a real filing cabinet.

Below you will see an example of how this works. The main page has the list of jobs. To file waiting scans you would simply select the appropriate job the hit execute. The program goes to the scans in waiting folder and grabs each pdf renaming and moving it properly. Below is an example of the Custom Execute option which allows you to apply a custom name for the file renaming process. Use this if you want to make a special receipt easier to find. In the example I want to call a specific scanned receipt macbook. You can see the original scan waiting in my scans in waiting folder.

Once the initial Custom Execution is finished you can see what the file has become and where it is located (in the receipts folder):

Lastly here is an image of the edit/add jobs page where you manage your jobs. You can see how easy it is to supply the source and destination location as well as filing name.It is important that when you supply your locations to close it with a “\” or “/” depending on your operating system (mac vs windows). Also I noticed mac’s do not use drive numbers, so if you are using a NAS for your virtual filing cabinet your folder would be mounted under the volumes folder like this /Volumes/Shares/FilingCabinet/.

Here is a quick video showing how fast and slick the whole process can be once you get everything setup properly. I now go through bills faster than I did with a physical filing cabinet.

This is free software so if you found it helpful please consider making a donation or simply buy your scanner at amazon through he links above. For what it’s worth I bought the Xerox Documate 3125 through amazon prime and love it. Thanks.

Fix DLP Dots – Replace DLP Chip Yourself

Do you have a white or black dot appearing on your DLP TV. Well the bad news is that means a hundred more will appear within a few weeks. What are these dots and how do you fix it? Well these dots appear because of a failing DLP chip. Your tv is probably a few years old with this starts to happen. You fix it by calling your TV manufacture and request they send you a new chip (and you volunteer to replace the chip yourself). That is what I did with my Mitsubishi WD7373. At first they wanted me to pay for a certified installer to put the chip in, but I had the ticket elevated and the ended up shipping the chip directly to me via ups.

dlp dots appearing on someones dlp tv

Exchanging the chip is quite simple. Especially if you know how to change the processor in your computer. It is simply a chip that is seated in a special socket with a locking mechanism. It also has a heat sink just like a computer processor. I will go over each step in this article.

First you need to wipe away all dust on the outside of your TV. Then unplug the TV. Then you need to scoot your TV/Stand out so you have full access to the rear of the TV. You will need to unscrew all of the screws holding the bottom back peice of the TV on. This is called the service plate. Its basically the whole bottom rear part of your TV enclosure.

    after removing service bracket

Now that you have removed the service bracker we need to uplug all of the wires going into the mainboard. Once completed, remove the hearsink. Now you will be looking at the mainboard that is held in place by a few screws. Some of the older TV’s have this board specially fitted so that the dlp chip is perfectly lined up with the light engine so the image on the screen fits the TV. If your tv is like this, use masking tape and a marker on each side of the mainboard to be able to align it back after you removed and exchanged the chip. I found that my mainboard had slots that it had to line up with in order to be seated properly so alignment was not an issue.

Now it is time to unscrew and remove the mainboard….but be careful. There is a small ribbon cord that you need to remove carefully so that it doesnt break. After removing the board this is what you are left with:

Once you have the board out flip it over. You will see the socket that you dlp chip is locked in. Simply turn the locking mechanism and remove the chip. Then place the new chip in …. only one way possible (make sure it is seated properly). Then lock it in. If you are certain it is seated and locked in properly go ahead and put the board back in. Make sure to insert the ribbon cable back where you found it in the board.

Next step is to plug all the wires back in (don’t put heatsink back on yet). We want to power up the tv and make sure there are no vertical lines on the screen that would indicate the chip is not seated properly. If you see the vertical lines then remove the mainboard and reseat the dlp chip. Repear these steps until the chip is seated properly. It took me two trys. Never run your tv longer than 10 minutes without the heatsink on the dlp chip.

a look at the mainboard durring testing

Once you are happy with the image on the screen, it is time to replace the heat sink (use cpu termal grease if you have some…i used artic silver #5….this should help the chip run cooler and last longer) and all the cableing back the way you found it. Now screw back in the service bracket on the back and viola! your done!

good as new after dlp chip change

The chip I was sent was generations newer than the one that originally came with my tv and broke. I am hoping the new chip will last longer than the 4 years that my first chip lasted.

-added support for standard single well AFIT modeling (meaning AFIT calculations now work)
-added save production button that is mean to update a wells production if the well is already in the db
-added custom data table creator (allows user to run sensitivities on any parameters in the sheet)
-added price multipliers for oil, gas, and ngl’s
-added improvements to the algorithm that brings in production data
-massive performance enhancements in the decline generation part of the program
-added interval reporting volumes in the economic section
-fix problem with the way gross revenues were being displayed
-increased the speed of the IRR calculator
-fixed economic issues when using “start at end”
-made wells with higher than 100% IRR equal to 100%
-fixed working interest issue with shipping and handling fees
-fixed GOR and Yield data generators for lower volumes
-implemented new curve dragging algorithm to smooth out the process of changing IP’s on the curve fit page
-fixed some issues with new curve dragging technique
-removed automatic “start at end” after the auto curve fit algorithm finishes. If you want the curve to start at end after the auto forecast simply hit the start at end button now.

Quick Decline Ultimate is a professional oil and gas decline analysis and economic package meant to be affordable to anyone (direct competitors like PHDwin charge thousands of dollars for a license). Forecast royalty payments, compare well results, predict economics, rank projects, store all of your previous work in the built in database, and so much more. Quickly and easily pull in data from any source using the unique built in clipboard feature (basically copy/paste). This program also imports IHS and HPDI (now DI Desktop) export files. You can also link Quick Decline Ultimate to your company’s production database to dynamically pull production for your company’s wells each time you evaluate them. This program is the perfect compliment to our Texas Production Query Tool.

This program is not just for petroleum engineers, royalty owners can also use this program to attempt to forecast royalty payments. Simply fit your land’s production data then output the economics in monthly format. It’s that simple. Anyone can use this program it is so quick and simple. This program was built out of necessity (by me) to help me quickly and easily perform decline analysis and economics on wells that I was investigating. Pulling the production into Aries was too time consuming for the quick looks I do. This program is the perfect tool to copy production data into and get and answer to the well’s economics almost instantly. I also put in an automatic curve fitting routine to help fit declines faster. All you have to do is type in the correct b factor and then hit auto forecast and viola (assuming your data has a nice and normal decline otherwise you may want to manually fit the data). If the auto forecast can’t seem to figure out your data, simply go the the curve fit chart and drag the curve around until you match your data.

This program was built to match Aries as closely as possible. It uses hyperbolic, harmonic, and exponential curve to forecast production. The economic analysis uses very familiar parameters the to average petroleum engineer. Recently the AFIT models were updated so now AFIT calculations are matched to Aries as well. I have even included a sheet sheet to help non petroleum engineers fit the production data for their reservoir.

    Demonstration Video

Quick Decline Ultimate is being brought to you at the extremely affordable price of $99.00. Most decline and economic packages today like PHDwin and Aries sell for several thousads of dollars per license. This program is an attempt to provide the average royalty owner, landman, or garage petroleum engineer a full featured and robust decline and economics package. This program requires Microsoft Office 2007 (specifically excel and access). It is recommended to have at least 2GB of memory and an Intel Core i5 or higher processor.
